2D Echo

Echocardiograms also provide highly accurate information on heart valve function. They can be used to identify leaky or tight heart valves. While the EKG can provide clues to many of these diagnoses, the echocardiogram is considered much more accurate for heart structure and function.

Echocardiography is done in patients for:

Assessment of regional wall motion abnormality, LV Function, pre & post operative assessment. Valvular Heart Disease, Congenital Heart Disease, Assessment of Prosthetic Valve functioning , Endocarditic, myocarditis and pericardial disease, cardiac tamponade,

  • Complications of MI e.g. VSD, MR, Effusion.
  • Intracardiac mass- e.g. tumor, thrombus. Cardiac chamber size, LVH.
  • Arrhythmias.
  • Assessment of right heart, estimation of PASP, PAH
  • In Stroke- Cardiac source of Embolism
  • Systematic Disease e.g. Marfan’s Syndrome, SLE, Amyloidosis, Melignancies

ECG

An electrocardiogram, ECG is a medical examination that identifies various heart problems by measuring the electrical activity generated by the heart.

ECG is done in patients in the case of symptoms such as dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing), chest pain (angina), fainting, palpitations or when someone can feel that their own heart beat is abnormal.

  • An ECG can be used to assess if the patient has had a heart attack or evidence of a previous heart attack
  • An ECG can be used to monitor the effect of medicines used for coronary artery disease.
  • An ECG reveals rhythm problems such as the cause of a slow or fast heart beat.
  • To demonstrate thickening of a heart muscle (left ventricular hypertrophy), for example due to long-standing high blood pressure
  • To see electrolyte imbalance in blood
